Now, she is a professor and a writer for feminist and racism. In “Peculiar Benefits,” she also talks a little bit about her background and privilege. She is “a person of color ” she “grew up middle class and then upper middle class.” From her description, it can be seen that her life is somehow easy and bright as she is brought up in a happy family, has a good education, and gets a stable job. One important thing about her credential is that she acknowledges her privilege, but she thinks it is “embarrassing” and “difficult … to accept.” She does not just show off her benefits, but she also mentions some “pain” in her life. By discussing both advantages and disadvantages, Roxane Gay can show her impartiality. On one hand, she has difficulty accepting her privilege, so she understand why some people may refuse it. On the other hand, she is also aware of her benefits, and she provides some good reasons for people to acknowledge their own privilege. I find this essay somehow interesting to read because of Roxane Gay’s word choice. She surprised me by using some strange words such as “peculiar benefits,” “immunity,” “Game of Privilege.” The interesting title “peculiar benefits” really catches readers’ attention because of the somehow contrasting connotations between the two words. “Peculiar” refers to something that is strange or unusual while “benefit” is absolutely an advantage that people desire to have.
